In Terry Pratchett's Reaper Man, Death has left Discworld - but that's not necessarily a good thing. After all, chaos always ensues whenever important public services are withdrawn, and Discworld is no exception. Society is suddenly overrun by ghosts and poltergeists, while Dead Rights activist Reg Shoe finds himself busier than he's ever been and newly-deceased wizard Windle Poons rises from his coffin as a living corpse.

A 'sourcerer' is born in Discworld - a wizard so powerful that he makes all other magicians look like a bunch of fools in pointy hats. Now, suddenly, Discworld is brought to the brink of an all-out thaumaturgical war. The only hope for peace is Rincewind, the failed magician who has a risky plan to save the world. Story
Interesting Times, the 17th novel in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, finds the planet's oldest empire in the midst of bitter turmoil after the publication of the revolutionary treatise What I Did on My Holidays. Workers, with nothing to lose but their water buffaloes, are joining forces against old warlords, spreading violence throughout Discworld's ancient cities. All that stands in the way of total destruction are three decidedly non-heroic creatures.

It isn't easy, being a teenage pharaoh. You're not allowed to carry money, uninhibited young women peel your grapes for you, everyone thinks you're responsible for making the sun rise and the corn grow, you keep dreaming about seven thin cows and seven fat cows (one of them playing the trombone), and on top of everything else, the Great Pyramid has just exploded because of paracosmic instability.

What could be easier than preventing a servant girl from marrying a prince, especially for three clever witches? But Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick face more than they bargained for when they journey to the distant city of Genua. Another Pratchett tour de force

Publisher's Summary
You've heard of Faust - this is Eric. There's a difference.
Eric is 14, lives on the famed and magical Discworld, and is the first ever demonology hacker. Fortunately, he doesn't succeed in raising any devils, but he does raise Rincewind (the most incompetent wizard in the universe) and the Luggage (the world's most dangerous travel accessory).
When Eric turns them loose on an unprotected world, the idea is that Rincewind will grant him his three rather adolescent wishes. You know, the usual three: live forever, rule the world, meet the most beautiful woman who ever lived. Simple, really.
Getting marooned at the dawn of Time, changing the future, and meeting history's most embarrassing god is only the start. Creating life on the Discworld is a mere detail. Because Rincewind ends up going through Hell. Literally.
Please note: This is a vintage recording. The audio quality may not be up to modern day standards.

Stephen Briggs delivers again
Hi Audible, please have Stephen read all Discworld novels he hasn't yet. He is the ONLY narrator that does Sir Terry's wonderful, funny, amazing stories any justice. His narration is spot on, his accents are consistent and distinct and bring the characters to life.

Rincewind returns
Through a million to one chance Rincewind manages to escape the Dungeon Dimensions and finds himself under the control of Eric, a teenage-Demonologist. Eric's only desires are to be ruler of the disc, have the most beautiful woman and live forever. No one is more amazed than Rincewind himself when the wishes seem to get fulfilled, however, with unexpected side-effects...
Pratchett delivers as always a fantastic story taking dozens of jibes at world history such as the Trojan War or modern Management methods. Even though the story is short (by Terry's standards) it is very fast paced and never gets boring :).

As Good As They Get
If there is not something in this book that has everyone bursting into fits of uncontrollable laughter then there is something wrong with the world. From the fourteen-year old demonologist with a false beard, to the general who likes to leave decoy horses out the front while he sneaks round the back and not forgetting the demonic god who strikes fear into the hearts of all (at least until they find out he?s only six inches tall. There is something in this story for everyone.
Don?t be put off by the short length, this is still one of the best Pratchett books to date. It has the welcome return of old characters as well as an influx of new ones. We learn why hell is so much worse now than it was and also have the mystery of paperclips solved.

"The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intensions!"
Item... Not doing anything to solve a problem can provide opportunity for Others to make use of it.
Item... Getting out of the worst mess you have ever been in may not be such a good thing.
Item... Happiness is sometimes knowing without a doubt just how much worse things could be.
Vanity, Greed, Self-Importance, lust (well... Suspected lust), and many other sins will get you to hell. And sometimes walking fast and with confidence is all that will get you out.

Good story, great narration
This is a good story, but not the best of the disc world books. however the narration by Stephen Briggs is great as always. it is very easy to recognise the different characters when he reads and they are consistent book to book. worth getting to complete the disc world set, but if looking for a first book to get into the series I would recommend The Colour of Magic or Hogfather instead.

Short but distilled quality
Lots of the best of pratchett. It's a short story for sure but complete and full of his trademark observations about religion, bureaucracy and how jolly hellish it is, with some cheerful takes on stories from The Classics. Stephen Briggs is outstanding. Will listen again.
