The man who brought the kavorka to the Seinfeld show through one of the most remarkable and beloved television characters ever invented, Kramer, shares the extraordinary life of a comedy genius—the way he came into himself as an artist, the ups and downs as a human being, the road he has traveled in search of understanding.

“The hair, so essential, symbolizes the irrational that was and is and always will be the underlying feature not only of Kramer but of comedy itself. This seemingly senseless spirit has been coursing through me since childhood. I’ve been under its almighty influence since the day I came into this world. I felt it all within myself, especially the physical comedy, the body movements, so freakish and undignified, where I bumped into things, knocked stuff down, messed up situations, and often ended up on my ass.

“This book is a hymn to the irrational, the senseless spirit that breaks the whole into pieces, a reflection on the seemingly absurd difficulties that intrude upon us all. It’s Harpo Marx turning us about, shaking up my plans, throwing me for a loop. Upset and turmoil is with us all the time. It’s at the basis of comedy. It’s the pratfall we all take. It’s the unavoidable mistake we didn’t expect. It’s everywhere I go. It’s in the way that I am, both light and dark, good and not-so-good. It’s my life.”—Michael Richards, from Entrances and Exits

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I adore the immortal Seinfeld sitcom. I can't say I've ever seen Richards in anything else outside of it, so it was very interesting to come to learn about the man behind the iconic Kramer. Since my only impression of the man is from Kramer, it was very interesting to learn about his vulnerability and how spiritual he is. I couldn't help but go back to the very start of Seinfeld after finishing the book and watching with a new perspective exactly how Richards tussled and grew into the role of Kramer. The show really was an incredible cultural phenomenon.

Best Book I've read in a long time and he was such a great narrator. Can't recommend enough to fellow seinfeld lovers.

Michael Richards’ Entrances and Exits is raw, thoughtful, and incredibly well-narrated. His voice brings a real physicality and emotion to the story that reminds you why he was such an iconic physical comedian. He reflects on the Laugh Factory incident and fully admits the racist slurs were inexcusable, but he mostly frames it as a personal meltdown rather than really engaging with the deeper racial hurt. He talks a lot about his anger issues and shame, but doesn’t seem to have done much public work to rebuild trust with the Black community. In comedy, pushing boundaries depends on control and intent - and what happened that night wasn’t edgy character work, it was just rage. Even with that flaw, though, you can’t ignore how deep and layered he is as a person. Some of the best parts of the book are when he talks about searching for stillness and losing his identity in nature, like when he describes sitting by the ocean trying to silence the noise of fame. It’s a complicated listen, but a really human one.

A brilliant physical comedian with a complicated legacy
