About this listen

THE SUNDAY TIMES #1 BESTSELLER

Makes Prince Harry’s Spare look positively restrained’ SUNDAY TIMES

‘A jaw-dropping account of arrogance, financial incontinence, greed and, indeed, entitlement' DAILY EXPRESS

'This searing biography of Prince Andrew crackles with scandals' BBC NEWS

The first joint biography of the Duke and Duchess of York and the first full biography of either of them, by renowned royal biographer and literary agent, Andrew Lownie.

Drawing on four years of research, numerous FOI requests and interviews with over a hundred people who have never spoken before, the book traces the lives of the late Queen’s second son and his ex-wife through their childhoods, courtship, marriage, divorce, careers, and royal and charitable activities.

Still living in the same house, they claim to be "the happiest divorced couple in the world". The book investigates the reality of their relationship and their love lives. It charts Andrew’s record in the Falklands, his business activities and reveals details of how the couple have been able financially to sustain their extravagant lifestyles. It also recounts the full story of the Yorks’ links with Jeffrey Epstein.

Chronicling their lives in parallel, the picture that emerges is of a spoilt prince unable to connect and a duchess pushed by her insecurities into a desperate need to maintain the attention her ‘royal’ status brought. Rigorously researched and packed full of revelations, this is eye-watering biography at its best.

‘This isn't just a royal biography. It's a study in reputational collapse and the danger of unchecked power inside Britain's most protected institution' THE STANDARD

Andrew Lownes has written an intelligent, well balanced book. Both enlightening and well researched. His voice is pure silk and a pleasure to listen to.

Loved this book fabulous insight into just a terrible attitude of selfishness and entitlement! The amount of waste and jealousy combined with being oversexed has lead to a not so happy ending!

Spoilt and Spending!

While it was somewhat interesting to get some detailed info about Andrew & Sarah you could tell it was written by a historian obsessed with facts and not a biographer. Endless numbers which became mind numbing and not much more. Also, did we really need two different versions of the story about Andrew landing the helicopter at Sandringham for afternoon tea and the soldiers he was ferrying being told they could put their guns in the umbrella stand by the Queen?

Boring & repetitive

About a third of the way through and o must say I’m a bit disappointed. Undoubtedly Andrew and Sarah are greedy and have behaved badly but the narrative is marred by the priggish rather pompous attitude to everything they do, especially Sarah, apparently she can’t do anything right. I can’t help being reminded of Bill Brysons comment on the royal family in relation to Diana’s problems, he said something like: if you’re going to have something as peculiar as a royal family you’re going to have a lot of problems because they’re human beings and in a fundamentally untenable position, so of course they’re going to behave badly and that you have to take the bad with the good. The endless carping and bullying from the UK press is all part of the game, Lownie endlessly quotes nasty newspaper headlines dreamed up by spiteful sub editors as they are true reflections of public opinion. Lownie is a monarchist so is essentially part of the problem, a more outsider point of view would be good here.

First impressions

I found the book very balanced account of the lives of Andrew and Sarah.

Very interesting couple, both seem damaged and flawed. In a weird way they are well suited, and no doubt that is why they still live together in a dysfunctional way. Both possess peculiarities, narcissism and yes, entitlement.
No doubt they have passed on dysfunction to their daughters.
I found it sad in a sense, they are empty people filling themselves with “things” and living a lie, when it seems they need live and acceptance.
Great investigative journalism ….

Eye opening

Dense with eye opening revelations about the global power mongers, wheelers and dealers and leaders. A must read if you want to know some of what goes on behind the scenes.
