Publisher's Summary

Love is worth a fortune in this sizzling novel of accidental romance and riches by New York Times bestselling author J.S. Scott.

Wildlife conservationist Jade Sinclair isn’t used to having money. But when she and her siblings learned they were part of the mega-rich Sinclair dynasty, they became billionaires overnight. Jade doesn’t even know how to act rich, especially when she’s dealing with an arrogant, privileged, unreasonably sexy snob like Eli Stone.

Unlike Jade, Eli grew up rich, and he just keeps getting richer. Eli is always looking for an adventure, and he’s found an inviting one in Jade - as resistant as she is irresistible. His less-than-honorable plan? Get her alone in the wilderness by buying out all the spots in her survival class.

Calling a truce, they strike a bargain: Jade will teach Eli basic survival skills, and he’ll teach her how to navigate the world of the wealthy elite. Jade has only one condition - she will not let herself be seduced by him. But some things are easier said than done…

Broken Record

After the first two chapters it's pretty much a broken record. Chapters 3 through 9 are on repeat, reiterating the same thing over and over and over again. I was going to return the book but then I read the reviews and one said if I could stomach the repetitiveness until chapter 10 the story picks up. Kinda want to tell other readers to read the first two chapters and then skip to chapter 10. the only thing you'll miss is the annoyance of having to hear the same thing again and again.

Male voice

My only review is I would have hoped for a male voice for the male lead.

All the adverbs all the time

I like JS Scott. I do. I think there's redundancy amongst the billionaire storylines but that's ok. While there is nothing wrong with the narration of these audio books per se, I find myself preferring to read them. And would you like to know why? Of course you do, that is why you are reading this review! It is Ms Scott's love affair with the suffix -ly. A strong verb doesn't require an adverb and any decent editor should remove them. I'd think it wouldn't occur at Scott's level of writing and I find the recurring sound distracting. To quote Stephen King: "I believe the road to h*ll is paved with adverbs"

Disappointing

I read all the Sinclair's books, but this has been the most disappointing one by far.The book is way too long, could have been summarize in 15 chapters instead of 33. She kept repeating the same thing over and over and over again.

I hate not finishing a book...

But I quit this by chapter 3. I just couldn’t do anymore. It wasn’t even a good romance.

Narrator

Story needs a male narrator, difficult to follow the story with same one switching back and forth. The change in tone doesn't work.

Enticing!!!

Loved this story! It was wonderful to listen to and it got smoking hot a few times that had me blushing. The end left me curious about something and I now want to listen to book 2 to find out what happened.

Like Fifty Shades with Elon Musk

The voice actor gave an excellent performance, but the story is problematic for me. First of all, I just can't take Elon Musk as a romantic lead seriously, and the male lead is very obviously based on him. Then the author made him even creepier by treading deeply into stalker territory within the first few chapters.

In their first meeting, the protagonist is alarmed that billionaire Eli Stone (the potential love interest) had her background checked when she offered to buy one of his properties. Now that's par for the course in multimillion dollar business dealings, but when she confronted him about this, his response was simply, "You intrigued me." (or something to that effect) That's pure nonsense. He could have said something like, "In business, it's always best to know who you're dealing with." And it would make more sense for him to be intrigued by her AFTER reading her file. But no, this billionaire businessman was intrigued by a woman he had never seen and knew nothing about. If this were real life, I'd suspect him of projecting his desires onto her, as though she were some sort of blank canvas. He asks her on a date, and she refuses. He plays some mind games that make her uncomfortable, and she leaves the meeting.

Five months later, she's changed her number twice, and he still manages to contact her, persistently asking for dates in spite of her saying no multiple times. And what I find problematic is that red flags like this are framed as either romantic or mildly bothersome, rather than threatening.

This novel has all the problems of the Fifty Shades book series (the movies were thankfully tamed down later on) when it comes to stalking and potentially abusive behavior. If you're into Fifty Shades and are somehow turned on by Elon Musk, then this may be the book for you. But for me, it's a hard pass.
