Captain Joseph Baxtor and his crew on the sailing ship Phoenix cross dimensions through underwater portals on behalf of 'The Pantheon', a collection of cultures each led by their own created god. On their maiden voyage, they are sent to establish diplomatic relations with the El-Fax, a recently discovered, friendly culture. Rather than being the routine voyage expected, everything may not be as it first appears.

The author does an admirable job of developing an interesting polytheistic world here, across a slice-of-life short novel that is essentially a series of connected short stories, each with its own independent hook. Various parts of the world were strange, but they were also consistent, and just enough was revealed in explaining the world to support the various plots and keep the reader interested. Some of the chapters / stories seem obviously influenced by movies (e.g. Gremlins, Edge of Tomorrow), but they're generally well implemented and had me chuckling at times.

Writing quality is moderately good for KU, but the author's habit of dangling participles is particularly evident here. I lost count, but I think they must be in the hundreds, with some of the battle scenes grammatically saying one thing happens while context reveals that the author actually means the opposite. Similar errors in other scenes just lead to grammatical nonsense, such as inanimate objects performing actions. I know what the author means, but it's not what he's written. There are also some other errors such as incorrect use of lay versus lie, pronoun issues, and some singular-plural mismatches.

Audiobook narration is good, with consistent character voices and (mostly) proper pronunciation.
