Inizia in questo modo la premessa di Giacomo Leopardi, che nel 1825 tradusse "L'Enchiridion" - che significa: oggetto che si tiene in mano - conosciuto come "Manuale di Epitteto". Si tratta di un insieme di regole filosofiche, etiche e stoiche, messe insieme attorno all'anno 100 d.C. da Arriano, scrittore nato nella parte settentrionale della Turchia, seguace del filosofo Epitteto.

I semplici - ma profondi e in alcuni casi taglienti - precetti di Arriano, influenzarono fortemente i filosofi delle epoche contemporanee e successive. Fu la "saggezza" disarmante del manuale che lo rese famoso.
