About this listen

The highly anticipated sequel to the SUNDAY TIMES bestselling EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE 'Bloody brilliant'
V.E. Schwab ‘A ripping read’
Joe Abercrombie

Gabriel de León has saved the Holy Grail from death, but his chance to end the endless night is lost.

After turning his back on his silversaint brothers once and for all, Gabriel and the Grail set out to learn the truth of how Daysdeath might finally be undone.

But the last silversaint faces peril, within and without. Pursued by children of the Forever King, drawn into wars and webs centuries in the weaving, and ravaged by his own rising bloodlust, Gabriel may not survive to see the truth of the Grail revealed.

A truth that may be too awful for any to imagine.

Includes a bonus conversation between Jay Kristoff and actor/director Joseph Morgan (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Halo).

Critic Reviews

‘If you were bitten by Empire Of The Vampire, you’ll know what to expect; if not, here’s another beautifully constructed, epic maelstrom of high-stakes gore and adventure… Awesome.’ Daily Mail

Praise for EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE

‘A ripping read – dark as black coffee and savage as a slit throat’

Joe Abercrombie, bestselling author of the First Law trilogy

‘A gothic bloodbath that will leave any reader breathless. The story is a vast apocalyptic canvas, reminiscent of Justin Cronin’s THE PASSAGE or even Stephen King’s THE STAND, yet Kristoff’s work stands on its own ruthless merit as the opening gambit of a richer tale yet to unfold. I can’t wait to return again to this rich, lush, and bloody world. Until then, read this book now!’

James Rollins, no.1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE LAST ODYSSEY and THE STARLESS CROWN

‘A wonderfully crafted tale, the pieces as meticulously interlocked as fine woodwork. A chilling new take on vampire lore and those who must battle that darkness. EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE looks fearlessly at how ruthless Good must become when confronted with unrelenting Evil’

Robin Hobb, SUNDAY TIMES and NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE ASSASSIN’S APPRENTICE

'Brilliant and unputdownable, with tenderness and light bound into the bitter dark of a grim and fascinating world'

Laini Taylor, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of STRANGE THE DREAMER

'This book is bloody brilliant'

V.E. Schwab, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE

Book 2 exceeded what my imagination thought it could handle! Author has made it to my numero uno. The character's stories weaving together, the pace, how violent, heartbreaking and sexy , all in a perfect 30 hours. Narrators were incredible. They both elevated the characters perfectly..

INCREDIBLE

Waiting for the resolution, apart from that small inconvenience, there is nothing to dislike.

'Bloody' brilliant story. It's no fairytale,it is however, everything that I didn't know I needed in a book.

Wow, what a spectacular sequel! I found the second instalment of the Empire of the Vampire series an even more enjoyable reading experience than the first. This is another five-star read.

What made this story shine interesting and compelling is how it expanded the world and the characters. Whilst Gabriel's story remains central, the narrative goes into other compelling character arcs, giving you a fascinating new perspective on the grim dark world of the Empire. We also get a few glimpses into enemies' perspectives which add extra depth to the story and the world building.

Whilst similarly to the first book there is a lot of blood, gore, violent fighting scenes, swearing and adult situations in this book, the writing style is such that somehow it doesn't read as off-putting (for the most part). And the friendships and camaraderie between characters perfectly balance the darkness of the story. The action is well paced with some genuine plot twists that keep you invested in the story. The ending was so masterfully done that it made me feel emotional and even brought me to tears which was unexpected and definitely didn't happen in book one.

I really enjoyed the expanded lore on the various vampire lines—the ancien vampires in the story are not simple leeches and mindless monsters, they have non-trivial personalities with quirks and character which makes the story even more captivating. The vampires from the Dyvok line were pretty interesting and fun to read about.

Beyond the epic scale, the book maintains excellent character work. I enjoyed reading about the friendships and relationships between the characters and the banter is sharp, fun, and entertaining through the book. A special mention goes to the top-notch audio book narration. The dual narrators did an amazing job bringing the story to life and I absolutely loved the audio book version which also included bonus chapters and an interview with the author at the end.
Overall, this is a spectacular sequel that did not disappoint. I can't wait for the final book!

Incredibly written and narrated. Only bad thing now is waiting again for the next instalment. Kristoff is a phenomenon!

Just amazing, favourite series ever.

An epic follow-up to EotV. The story and mythos delves deeper, the battles escalate and the blood flows in abundance. If you liked the 1st book this is just as good.
The addition of a second narrator was jarring at first but makes sense as the story evolves. At times the narrators seem to forget which character they are representing with established accents dropped in parts. But overall very good, need the final book ASAP.
