Story
Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In recent months, the pandemic has forced us all to reevaluate our assumptions about health and safety and multiple acts of police brutality have challenged most of us to reconsider our responsibility for fighting racism. Yet in our daily lives, too many of us still favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt.

A great wake up call
- By Anonymous User on 18-01-2021
Publisher's Summary
Everyone knows that high IQ is no guarantee of success, happiness, or virtue, but until Emotional Intelligence, we could only guess why. Daniel Goleman's brilliant report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers startling new insight into our “two minds” - the rational and the emotional - and how they together shape our destiny.
Through vivid examples, Goleman delineates the five crucial skills of emotional intelligence and shows how they determine our success in relationships, work, and even our physical well-being. What emerges is an entirely new way to talk about being smart.
The best news is that “emotional literacy” is not fixed early in life. Every parent, every teacher, every business leader, and everyone interested in a more civil society has a stake in this compelling vision of human possibility.
Critic Reviews
“A thoughtfully written, persuasive account explaining emotional intelligence and why it can be crucial to your career.” (USA Today)

You will finally learn why you did all those stupid things even though you didn't want to, and why the people around you seem to do stupid things even though they don't want to.

a worthy read
Great information to assist with understanding how our emotions run our lives and what we can do to become more emotionally mature.
From the science of how the brain responds to emotions and the neurotransmitters involved in giving us feelings, to validate results in school children emotional development programs. More schools need to offer this in the regular curriculum! A much needed book for adults and teenagers to read with vast reaching application, for a better society.

I wish I had listened to this book earlier in life or that this topic was more spoken of and better understood in our society. The book has some great insights into self awareness and empathy. I think it is a book that you will get something out of every time you listen to it as I think it is one of those books you can listen to a few times throughout life. Certainly made me very interested in learning more on the topic. Highly recommend. I certainly got a lot more than I expected out of the book.

Good book. Not so as audiobook.
I was looking forward to this book after hearing an interview with the author, Daniel Goleman. I was pleased enough with his narration of the Preface or Introduction. However, when the main narrator started Part One, I found hit tone and cadence very robotic sounding. It was such a distraction and annoyance that I stopped listening after the first chapter. I ended up returning the audiobook. Disappointing.

Too bad the editing on this amateur level. The preview only covers the introduction read by the author which is great. When the narration from Barrett Whitener starts horrible editing starts too. Mechanical, sped up, monotone narration makes it really hard to enjoy and focus on the book.

Narrator too Robotic
Absolutely struggled to finish. Forced myself to out of sheer will. Most memorable moment was when it was over. First reason I did not enjoy it is that the narrator was extremely robotic and monotone. For a book about emotional intelligence, the narrator read with zero emotion. which made it difficult to stay with. The next reason I did not enjoy it is that it was not what I expected. I was looking for a book about emotional intelligence as it applies to leaders, CEOs, business relationships, etc...and this book was not that. I would not recommend this book to anyone else.

This book talked an awful lot about school age children and strangely, child molesters. I'm an adult, looking for ways to improve myself NOW. Looking back on my youth and reasons and examples of how things affected my emotional intelligence does nothing for me. bad bad bad read..
If not dead already from boredom, you'll certainly be no more 'emotionally intelligent' reading/listening to this tome.
Long winded, self-congratulatory and tons of tedious human brain physiology trivia and minutiae listing various emotional impairments and what not.
You could sum the whole thing up by saying 'along with IQ, being emotionally mature is important'.
