Die Gefahr, die der SOL im Osath-System drohte, existiert nicht mehr. Atlan und seinen Gefährten ist es gelungen, die Demontage des Hantelraumers zu verhindern, den Zugstrahl abzuschalten und den Herrn in den Kuppeln vom Unrecht seines Tuns zu überzeugen. Dadurch wähnt sich der unsterbliche Arkonide seinem Ziel ein großes Stück näher. Nun kann er die SOL endlich nach Varnhagher-Ghynnst führen und den Auftrag der Kosmokraten erfüllen. Doch es kommt anders. Zwar setzt die SOL ihre lange Reise fort, aber ihr Ziel ist nicht das von Atlan erhoffte. Der Hantelraumer erreicht schließlich Chail, die Heimat von Akitar. Dessen Volk wird angeblich von den rattenähnlichen Roxharen unterdrückt und missbraucht. Atlan, Bjo Breiskoll und der Magnide Wajsto Kolsch brechen mit der CAMELOT zu einem Erkundungsflug auf - und müssen auf Chail notlanden...
