Roger's daughter, Deborah, takes a great fancy to Emily, and when Emily has moved to another household in Hull she finds that her new employer's son, Hugo, is to marry Deborah. But Hugo, too, has taken a fancy to Emily and dishonours and then betrays her to such an extent that she is imprisoned, tried and deported to Australia.

Enjoyable but predictable
If you enjoy the 'maid despoiled by privileged son of the house eventually makes good' then you won't be disappointed. The characters are well drawn but what makes this a notch above other books of its genre is the wonderful narration of Anne Dover, I swear she could read a shopping list and make it sound interesting. A joy to listen to, I'm off to search for more of her work, regardless of genre.

Emily the stupid
I could easily hate this book/story the book starts out promising ok so we wait for Emily to grow up and be mature what a surprise even to the end of the book she acts like the idiot she's through out the book and I wonder why Philip even bother
Megan and Joe story is so much better the writer wants us to believe only Deborah is crazy but I think Emily is not to right in the head too the only 5 stars is the narrator A D did an excellent job
