Mamy więc główną bohaterkę - Magdalenę Brzeską, naiwną, zagubioną altruistkę, którą przytłacza świat obłudy. Nie pomogą jej mądre rady profesora Dębickiego, alter ego pisarza. Madzia pracuje na pensji pani Latter - kobiety samodzielnie walczącej o swój byt, a jednocześnie żyjącej pod tyranią własnych dzieci, w tym pięknej Helenki. Poznajemy też damy klasowe, ciężko pracujące na swe utrzymanie, którym jednak świat zabrania wszelkiej swobody. Oraz wielkie i mniej wielkie damy przysyłające na pensję swoje córki.
