Publisher's Summary

Veteran royal broadcaster Jennie Bond explores the life of Britain's longest reigning monarch.

Wife, mother and head of state, who is the real Elizabeth? What do the headlines hide? How close to reality are the television interpretations? Once a minor royal, she is now one of the most recognisable women in the world. Admired by many, she has reigned through a period of unprecedented change, steering the monarchy through the end of an empire, public scandals and private losses.

This in-depth history uses archives, recreations and eyewitness testimony to bring to life the story of this most remarkable woman.

Some unvarnished truths

Beautifully narrated and including quips and quotes from Her Majesty and her family, this tells much that we already know and more. With a long life comes many experiences and it pretty honestly sums up the Queen’s life so far. It portrays a woman born into privilege and with such high expectations of herself, that she seems to have become quite cold and remote to other’s feelings and needs (and perhaps to her own) that she’s somewhat robotic. Royalty has had so many scandals that I have mostly lost regard for them. The self serving behaviour, particularly in connection with Dianna Spencer being used as a “womb“ takes some beating. Maybe the younger ones like William and Kate will be able to restore some much needed respect.
We all do well to remember we are equal before God.

Surprised me how much I enjoyed it!

I have to admit, I only picked this up because it was free on Audible and I was mildly curious. I didn't expect to really be super interested. But this is very well written, produced, and narrated. I found myself swept along in the life of an amazing and all she's experienced and had to weather. Well worth a listen if you have interest in British history and even if you don't.

Way better than I'd expected!

I'm not normally into Non-Fiction or biographies of any form (books or shows) but this was surprisingly interesting to listen to.

I'm only a few chapters in but I'm suddenly wondering why I disliked History so much at school! The shows go through the decades - from the 1920 - and tell you the story of how the Royals have been giving to the country throughout.

As the narrator put it, the Monarchy have to do the impossible by "appearing grander than then people, servants of the people and of the people, all at the same time".

Plus it was free so why wouldn't you at least give it a go!

Excellent documentary..

An excellent documentary, and considering it was free, even better. I say this as someone with only a passing interest in the monarchy.

Surprisingly good

As an Irishman born in Belfast I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. It gave me a new perspective on the Royal family, especially the Queen.

Well worth a listen.

A great production which revealed a lot about Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Family than I knew before. Highly recommend it.

Quite Interesting

If ever anything was written with an agenda, this is it. It's quite interesting, although takes a different view from some insights into the Royal Family I've heard/seen, but it is hardly a dispassionate, objective account of the Queen's reign and family.

Fascinating and informative

For someone from a Commonwealth country, this was a helpful way to refresh oneself on the royal family's history. It was objective and gave insight to the decisions made or not made given the time in history it was. Amusing at times too and kept up listener's interest.
