About this listen

Paul Verhoeven's ex-cop dad, John, spent years embroiled in some of the seediest, scariest intrigue and escapades imaginable. One day John offered Paul the chance of a lifetime: he'd spill his guts on tape. What unfolded in Loose Units was a goldmine of true-crime stories, showcasing John's dramatic experience of policing in Sydney in the 1980s and brilliantly twisted sense of humour. But what happened next in John's career was twice as weird.

Electric Blue spans the final years of John's stint in the New South Wales police force, when he took up an offer to move into the grimy, analytical world of forensics. Paul unpicks his father's most terrible cases. There was the case of a rapist hiding in the walls of shower block, a body that was quite literally cooked, and the bizarre copycat suicides.

But what's it actually like to have a heroic ex-cop as a dad? Paul and John delve into their unique father-son relationship and how they ended up so different to each other. They figure out how to deal with the choices they've made...or wish they'd made. And Paul's mum, Christine, reveals what it was like to be a pioneering female cop in the '80s when misogyny was rife in the force.

Thrilling, fascinating and unexpectedly laugh-out-loud funny, Electric Blue is another high-octane adventure in policing, integrity and learning what family is really all about.

There's something to be said about the unique father/son relationship here, throughout the chapters of Electric Blue, Paul weaves the stories of what happens behind the scenes of forensic police work as told from the memories of John's eyes. Its one of those stories that once you start you don't want to put down, and you will literally laugh and cry along with both Paul and John.

The stories are well done and the narration good.
I enjoyed the different last chapter.
The reason I did not go 5 stars is because I felt I had heard the stories already in the podcast. I am a huge fan of the podcast and have listened from the beginning.
It was still good to listen to the stories in a slightly different format.

Same

Not only is the book extremely good, the bond between this father and son is very clear. The way that John engages in the stories toward the end of the book is heart warming. Can’t wait for the next book to come out..

Cracking book

AMAZING!!! The story itself was fantastic and the story telling from Paul was impeccable. I definitely didn’t want it to end and hope that there’s another book on the way!

Loved the first book and love the podcast. Whilst this book was well written and well read I feel it misses the true mark, which is the enjoyable banter between John and Paul(which I guess you'd only know about through the podcast)

The last chapter was hard to listen through, not true to the books genre and kept dragging, unfortunately not a great ending. There wasn't any real new material, it's stories I'd already heard through the podcast.

Just OK

I laughed, teared up, held my breath, gasped, and laughed again.
There’s a special part of this book that could have been lost in translation from page to audio, but alas, they made it work!
Highly recommend listening to this after you’ve heard the first book “Loose Units”.

Fantastic follow up that holds its own
