Un joven doctor acaba de abrir una pequeña consulta en una ciudad rural del sur de Inglaterra. Ilusionado, espera la llegada de su primer paciente. Van pasando los días, pero no llega ninguno. Hasta que, una noche, su ayudante, abandonando momentáneamente su afición por los caramelos de menta, le comunica que hay una dama esperando a poder hablar con él en su consulta.
