Estas cartas hubieran permanecido en el limbo de las hemerotecas de no ser por Alberto Ghiraldo, que en 1928 dio a la imprenta unas Obras inéditas de Galdós en varios tomos, cuyos volúmenes VI y VII llevaban el título de Cronicón. Ghiraldo realizó una labor notable: del conjunto de las cartas entresaca aquellas (o aquellos párrafos, en su caso) que se refieren a un mismo asunto y compone así varias unidades narrativas independientes.
