I liked the historical perspective and the apparent complexity of the plot. To use the amber pearl as a dramatic device was fantastic. What I didn’t like was the excessive criticism of the Soviet government, because, while deserving of it, its repetitiveness, the long dialogue about the horrors made the story melodramatic and blurred the political message. Russia is still bad now. Overall I enjoyed the reading and loved Rafael’s values. I don’t know why he complained, Twenty years of happiness was a gift, , most people don’t have any of it.
