Die Situation in der Milchstraße ist zum Jahresbeginn 1289 Neuer Galaktischer Zeitrechnung ziemlich angespannt. Mysteriöse Igelschiffe kreuzen in der Galaxis; sie haben schon mehrere Planeten besetzt und komplett von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten. Bisher hat man so gut wie keine gesicherten Erkenntnisse über die Fremden. Das in sich zerstrittene Galaktikum weiß keine Lösung, ist derzeit auch zu weit von einer Einigung entfernt: Misstrauen herrscht zwischen den großen Machtblöcken der Galaxis. Auch das Projekt Camelot, von den Unsterblichen ins Leben gerufen, ist gescheitert.
Zudem ist in direkter Nachbarschaft der Erde eine fremde Kultur aufgetaucht - auf Trokan, dem "zweiten Mars". Im Schutze eines Zeitrafferfeldes, das 250 Millionen Jahre in nicht einmal 70 Real-Jahren ablaufen ließ, entwickelte sich die Zivilisation der Herreach. Kein Mensch in der Milchstraße weiß Bescheid, wo Perry Rhodan sowie seine Freunde Reginald Bull und Alaska Saedelaere sind; sie verschwanden im Pilzdom auf Trokan und tauchten bisher nicht wieder auf.
Während es Alaska in die Galaxis Bröhnder verschlagen hat, sind Rhodan und Bull in Plantagoo unterwegs. Währenddessen spitzt sich die Situation in der Milchstraße zu, wobei die unbedeutende Dschungelwelt Lafayette zu einer Art Testfall wird. Icho Tolot, Gucky und Atlan sind auf dem Planeten im Einsatz; sie beobachten die Fremden - und diese warten offenbar auf EINE LADUNG VIVOC...
