Die Knechte der Leichenbestattungsanstalt trollten mürrisch mit den schwelenden Lichtern nebenher. Ihnen folgte die Menge der Leidtragenden. Von den Frauenzimmern zeugte nur eine dichte Reihe schwarzer Schleier, die sich wie berußte Spinngewebe zwischen dem Leichenkarren und den blanken Cylinderhüten der männlichen Trauergäste ausspannten.
