Hoch oben in der Aushöhlung einer uralten Eiche lebt das Eichhörnchenpaar Putz und Putzi. Putz ist meistens verschlafen und schlecht gelaunt, Putzi dagegen immer heiter, fleißig und hilfsbereit. Darum wird sie auch von allen Waldbewohnern geliebt und erlebt die abenteuerlichsten Geschichten. Ihre besten Freunde sind der Bär Brumm, der alte Igel Tapsy und die zwei lustigen Hasen Trick und Pick, die ständig für Heiterkeit sorgen. Eines Tages ziehen die Biber etwas Rätselhaftes aus dem Fluss. Die Elster Giggi verbreitet die Nachricht weiter, und bald ist der ganze Wald auf den Beinen, und alle laufen zum Fluss, um zu sehen, was dort geschieht.
