Publisher's Summary

The prize-winning author of Edinburgh Twilight returns to the darkening shadows of nineteenth-century Scotland to track a killer on a profane mission of revenge.

A wicked Scottish winter has just begun when pioneering female physician Sophia Jex-Blake calls on Detective Inspector Ian Hamilton to investigate the suspicious death of one of her patients - a railroad lineman who she believes succumbed to the horrific effects of arsenic poisoning. The most provocative aspect of the case doesn’t escape Hamilton: the married victim’s numerous sexual transgressions.

Now, for the first time since the unexplained fire that killed his parents, Hamilton enters the Royal Infirmary to gain the insights of brilliant medical student Arthur Conan Doyle. Then a second poisoning occurs - this time, a prominent banker who died in the bed of a prostitute. It appears that someone is making Edinburgh’s more promiscuous citizens pay for their sins.

As the body count rises and public panic takes hold, Hamilton and Doyle delve into the seedy underbelly of the city, where nothing is as it seems, no one is immune to murder, and even trusted friends can be enemies in disguise.

A very lucky find!

This book was just marvellous ( as was the first). The characters’ idiosyncrasies are charming and bring them to life very well. It was a treat to find Arthur Conan Doyle introduced, and I loved the developing relationship between he and Ian. I hope there is a third (and fourth and fifth ...) book to come. Well done Carole Lawrence. Brilliant work.

Graphic Sexual Abuse in a Stellar Reading by Simon Mattacks

Carole Lawrence’s Edinburgh Dusk deals with fictional but realistic accounts of sexual bullying and abuse. For readers who do not find graphic and detailed descriptions of such practices manageable in their fiction, please be warned. The descriptions of Edinburgh in the late nineteenth century and the use of historical figures for fiction may be fascinating and engaging, for readers who enjoy gothica. Animal lovers may feel conflicted. It’s a challenging listen for the above reasons. Applause and a standing ovation for Simon Mattacks’s superb performance of this book.

Excellent recording.

The story is very satisfying with many y plot twists and we'll drawn characters (including many historical ones). For me the best part was Mr. Mattacks' recording, which added another dimension to the story.... and it was free with kindle unlimited :) I would also recommend the first book in the series to readers who have not come across it yet.

Gripping!!

Although I found it difficult to listen to the parts about the father molesting his daughter, the story is absolutely brilliant!! Such a great author. Her descriptive abilities are superb, it really makes us, the listener, feel as though we are totally a part of the era the book is written in. Highly recommend it but just be prepared for those uncomfortable scenes between father and daughter.

Another Fantastic book by Carole Lawrence. It kept me on the edge of my seat! Simon Mattacks did an outstanding job with all of the characters and dialects. The audio version is definitely the way to go on this book. I will definitely check out more books by Carole Lawrence.

Another good book in the series.

I loved this book but was a bit disappointed that it was not the same Narrator. Simon Mattacks did a fine job but I was use to the voices being different. Also his female voices were not very different from each other. This story was hard because of how graphic it was with the abuse the young girl went through. I cannot wait for book 3.

I am not a fan of crime novels but I am a definite fan of this series!

Everything about this audible is wonderful. From the suspenseful and introspective writing to the narrator who does Scottish accents justice. This book is pleasure to immerse yourself in from the very first word uttered until the last. I can’t wait for the next book! Ms. Lawrence please gie oan wi' it.

Ian Is A Great Detective And Man

I loved this book. Detective Inspector Ian Hamilton is the kind of protagonist readers love. He is complex, but loves his family. He finds it hard to trust because of the loss of his parents and the mystery around their death that his aunt and brother seem to know but don’t want him to know. He is the youngest brother. Anyway, he has the cloak of his deceased uncle and wears it very well. These books would make a good TV series but the author will have to write faster. Her historical descriptions and the way she describes the parts of Edinburgh make you feel like you are there. I can’t wait for the next book but it looks like a long one if 2020 is the accurate date. In Book 2 DI Ian is chasing a poisoner and he figures it is a woman. There are lots of things that occur so you don’t really figure out who the murderer is until the end. The author introduces several possibilities without suggesting any single one. All you know is it is someone in the medical profession. Donald, Ian’s brother, is a medical student with ... wait for it....Arthur Conan Doyle who is very keen on murder. He and Ian become friends. I listened to this book in audible and enjoyed it even more. the narrator, Simon Mattacks, does a very good Scottish accent. Even better than the first book’s narrator. So, start with Book 1 and then read this one. You, too, will be waiting for the 3rd book.
