About this listen

E.R Braithwaite was a unique writer, a Guyanese-born British-American novelist, writer, teacher and diplomat best known for his stories of social conditions and racial discrimination against black people which reached international acclaim.

This collection features 3 of his key titles brought together as modern dramatizations, including his International bestseller - To Sir, with Love, his autobiographical novel about his time as an ex-RAF pilot from Guyana getting a job as a teacher in a radical school in post-war London's East End.

The sequel Paid Servant follows our protagonist as he is seconded to a London County Council as a child welfare officer, charged with cases involving "his people". He struggles to care for a mixed-race boy, who has been involved in the sex trade. Braithwaite encounters casual racism everywhere, and bristles at all reference to "his people".

We end the collection with a drama called Choice of Straws, set in London East End in the 1960s, about twins who regularly get themselves into fights and the consequences of their actions.

Kwame Kwei-Armah leads the cast in To Sir, with Love and Paid Servant. Other cast includes John Rowe, Sasha Behar, Liza Sadovy, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Harry Hepple and more.
