I 1935 lavede han ikke andet end at skrive på hans Lille verdenshistorie. Om morgenen og om eftermiddagen brugte han til at finde historisk materiale som han skrev i sin bog om aftenen. Helt frem til sin død i 2001 har redigerede Gombrich løbende i sin lille verdenshistorie.
