Publisher's Summary

Artificial intelligence is our last hope of saving the war-ravaged Earth in this near-future science-fiction thriller from the apocalyptic mind of New York Times best-selling author Nicholas Sansbury Smith (Hell Divers, The Extinction Cycle, Orbs).

The most advanced soldiers in human history are about to become obsolete.

Engines. Genetically modified warriors that keep the great Nova Alliance war machine churning against the enemy Coalition. Most days, Engines are all that stand between salvation and chaos. Led by legendary Engine Captain Akira Hayashi, Shadow Squad has fought on the frontlines for a decade. They are on the brink of victory when the Coalition launches a series of desperate and devastating attacks that cripple the Nova Alliance restoration sites vital to save the dying planet.

As the sites burn and Earth’s hope of salvation fades, Shadow Squad is equipped with neural implants to connect them to Apeiron, the first hybrid human-AI entity. She is coded for what Captain Hayashi believes is an impossible task - peace. But war isn’t the only threat to the Earth. Apeiron has uncovered a deadly secret with implications that could end all life. This rapidly approaching threat can be stopped only if humanity bands together on what will become known as E-Day, a pivotal moment that will determine the evolution - or the extinction - of the entire human race.

Not for me - sorry

Not enough suspension of disbelief for me sorry. Bad guys had too much dues ex machina.

Escapism at its best

Absolutely loved this latest tome from Nicholas Sansbury Smith. His previous work (Orbs, Hell Divers, Sons of War) is excellent, but with this one I feel he trusted himself to go to the next level, and for me he hit the mark. Nick sets the pace just right, allowing you to take a breath before taking you into roller coaster paced anxiety, that will leave you at the same time wanting, and worried about needing more! And it doesn’t need saying, but RC Bray was again, sublime. I eagerly await E-Day 2

story lacked insight

As always RC Bray shines and pulls the character s out of the dark.
The story itself does show promise but, lacks believe ability.
The characters lack foresight in a world where this type of intelligence should be well honed from years of doing battle.

Just plain boring

I’ve never written a review before but this book has driven me to it. Excited because it’s R C Bray, and Nicholas Sansbury Smith has had some good hits for me in the past, but this completely missed the mark. What’s with all the singing? And randomly having plot twists just thrown at you ***spoiler*** his nephew just apparently turns into his son with no lead up? Come on. Painful, awful listening. Don’t waste your time.

predictable, gory, disapointing

engines who are seemingly can't be stopped, yet everyone else can. barbarian humans who live in the wilderness, but seems to have relentless amounts of manufactured resources and technology. there is a lot of unessary gore. it reminds me a lot of why the suicide squad movie was not very enjoyable.

Nope - should have abandoned it.

Performance was excellent but with poor material. So nearly abandoned this one with the religious fervour (and damn singing)!! Overly explicit violence was a turn off for me (others may differ of course), and the outcome was entirely predictable. I wasted my time. Sorry about that - just not for me.
