About this listen
Selling his soul to the Devil was the best decision that Nick ever made.
He got the girl, saved the day, and settled in for a comfortable career at Devil Co. That means it’s the perfect time for God to have other plans for him–and guess who shows up to try and poach Nick for Their organization? Why have one complicated job working for a personified deity, when you can have two?
Caught between worlds, and moonlighting for the “good guys,” Nick learns his deal with Lucifer might not be what it seems. Uncovering a scheme to take advantage of the Devil himself rocks Nick to his core, and makes him question everything. The line between good and evil gets blurrier by the day, and Nick doesn’t know which shoulder angel to trust.
His partner Amy, a witch growing into powers of her own, warns him of the danger he faces, but can’t stop Nick from running headlong into it. Can Nick save himself, or will Amy need to make an ally of a former foe to save him from a fate worse than decaf?
©2024, 2025 Ben Schenkman and Caffeinated Terrier Press (P)2025 Ben Schenkman and Caffeinated Terrier PressMr Schenkman reads as a natural writer with a flair for effortless and exceedingly articulate prose. His words roll off the page in an accomplished cascade of well crafted imagery, fun banter and unexpected plot twists and turns. I fell under the spell woven by his clever prose after just a few chapters of book one and continue to be delighted by his storytelling.
I loved spending more time with Nick, and adding Amy's perspective into the narrative was brilliant. They are an appealing couple with nothing but green flags. They feel like a unique pairing to me - still living separately after more than two years together with neither rushing the other into a future that follows societal rules or romance novel tropes.
The ending was one I couldn't have predicted but can't wait to see evolve in the next book. God admitting they had been an "absentee parent" and "had rested on their laurels", plus the real world flow-on effects of this management style provided the impetus for Nick's plans, as well as creating a vehicle for more of the author's thought-provoking reflections. I don't mind having a mirror held up to my opinions while being politely asked to consider whether they are built on sand or bedrock.
I have to praise the top-notch quality of the production. Both narrators did an excellent job with their MC's and other characters, bringing them all to life in a convincing way that was a joy to my ears.
Of course I need more in this series and luckily for me there is a book three. Once again, highly recommended.
So good!
