Stockholm på 1700-talet. Ett pistolskott inne på Stockholmsoperan har ändat Gustaf III:s liv och de bestörta maskeradgästerna hålls kvar inne i byggnaden. Bland dem finns dramats huvudpersoner samt mördaren. Ur kaoset flyr den androgyna Tintomara som något oväntat blivit dramats huvudperson. Det är hon som lurar kvar kungen på maskeraden som blir hans död. Men det är också hon som stjäl drottningens juvelsmycke som sedermera, utan hennes vetskap, används för att finansiera regimförändringen efter Gustaf III:s död.
