About this listen
Award-winning author Juliet Marillier "weaves magic, mythology, and folklore into every sentence on the page" (The Book Smugglers). Now she begins an all-new and enchanting series that will transport readers to a magical vision of ancient Ireland... In exchange for help escaping her long and wrongful imprisonment, embittered magical healer Blackthorn has vowed to set aside her bid for vengeance against the man who destroyed all that she once held dear. Followed by a former prison mate, a silent hulk of a man named Grim, she travels north to Dalriada. There she'll live on the fringe of a mysterious forest, duty bound for seven years to assist anyone who asks for her help. Oran, crown prince of Dalriada, has waited anxiously for the arrival of his future bride, Lady Flidais. He knows her only from a portrait and sweetly poetic correspondence that have convinced him Flidais is his destined true love. But Oran discovers letters can lie. For although his intended exactly resembles her portrait, her brutality upon arrival proves she is nothing like the sensitive woman of the letters.
With the strategic marriage imminent, Oran sees no way out of his dilemma. Word has spread that Blackthorn possesses a remarkable gift for solving knotty problems, so the prince asks her for help. To save Oran from his treacherous nuptials, Blackthorn and Grim will need all their resources: courage, ingenuity, leaps of deduction, and more than a little magic.

Enthralling fantastical mystery
A hard one to stop listening to.
Story can be a bit of a depressing one at times, but very rewarding listen. Excellent performances by three readers.
Set in medieval ireland, and mostly a realistic feel, with some fantasy elements.
Makes you think a bit about justice, about the impact of crimes against someone and what appropriate punishments are deserved, who has the right to decide this, and the long term implications.
Definitely recommend.

Breath of fresh air
Really enjoyed this book about
Ancient Irish supernatural detectives. Grim and Blackthorn are wonderful protagonists. It's very interesting to watch their friendship slowly developing, as they try to put their past behind them. This process feels very human, with backsliding and trauma included. The three voice actors do much to humanize the characters, though the writing itself does its part to differentiate between them. In all, a worthwhile listen for anyone who likes an ancient setting for their fantasy.

excellent performance, fairly predictable tale
The story is pretty easy to guess from barely halfway. The characters are endearing and writing is skilful. I especially liked the way the form changes to match each characters perspective from chapter to chapter. But unfortunately the ending is massively predictable. Even to the smallest detail. The performance of the narrators however, is exquisite.

Not too shabby
A few pronunciation errors throughout, but otherwise well narrated/told. Similar to Marillier’s other stories.

Gritty and engrossing
The Blackthorn and Grimm trilogy are my favourite of Juliet Marillier’s novels. I love the courage, wisdom and ingenuity of the lead characters, their growth over time. It’s like a set of detective stories with Blackthorn and Grimm untangling deep and uncanny mysteries. Marillier makes the magical quite plausible and through the eyes and minds of Blackthorn snd Grimm, very grounded and empathetic. I’ve re-read all 3 and enjoyed them just as much the second time (once I got past the brutal beginning of Dreamers Pool.
