Publisher's Summary

I've got two choices. Join the Undercover Protectorate. Or die.

In a world of controlled magic, I’m an Unknown. Deadly power, little control. I’m only alive because I pay a Blood Sorcerer to keep me hidden. But when he comes to collect on the debt I can’t pay, one of his goons slams me with a deadly curse. Suddenly, I’m out of options and out of time.

When I’m given a rare chance to join the elite Undercover Protectorate and train at their academy to become an investigator, I have a way to hunt the cure for the curse. They have resources I don’t. Easy, since I’m broke.

Seems like a good plan, right? At least, until they tell me Cade will be joining me on my hunt for the Blood Sorcerer. He's an actual Celtic war god - and the hottest guy I’ve ever seen. The catch? I can’t let him know that I’m an Unknown, or I’m out on my ass and deader than Hades.

The Valkyrie boxed set contains all five audiobooks in the series full of non-stop action, adventure, magic, and romance. Titles include Undercover Magic, Academy of Magic, Pursuit of Magic, Attack by Magic, and Master of Magic.

"Please press 1 now" - Story Good. Narration meh

I tried. I really really tried.

Every.Single.Sentence. that does not have a character speaking has the Same. Exact. Inflection.
I listened as much as I could. Then my brain started adding "Please press 1 now" after each sentence.

The narrator *does* do a pretty good job with the different voices though

I'm not a frequent reviewer (I know, shame shame shame) but I have super high hopes someone who is more important than me can get this re-recorded. Can even be the same narrator...as long as each sentence ending doesn't sound like it was spoken by an automaton.

Great background books while doing chores

I’ve listened to these books, in addition to the stories about Cass, Del, and Nix, and this review is as much in favor of them as it is for this bundle. If you liked the others, this is worth a credit. There are some repeated phrases and the wrong voices done for a couple lines for this series, but I feel like that’s more an editing error than an issue with the books. They’re cute and easy to listen to while doing housework. Though it does feel as if I’ve heard the same love story written 4 different ways now, I’m more amused by how the same tropes keep appearing than upset. If you haven’t listened to anything in the series yet, I suggest starting from the top with Cass’ series.

errors in conversation.

in a few of the conversations they repeated themselves. example if I was to say. the sky is blue and you would say I like blue the conversations would be. the sky is blue. I like blue the sky is blue I like blue. either the reader made these errors or they are mistakes in the book.

Narrator

The dialog was ok. Internal monolog/narration was very stilted and the intonation was badly done. She needs to listen to it herself.

excellent series

out of the three sisters I think I like Bree best, Bree learns her new powers while trying to top the rebel gods and save her sister Rowan. Enjoyed listening to this set.

Not up to par with Hall’s other books

This series was my least favorite of Lindsey Hall’s books. Thankful for her other releases though, they are great.

telegram style reading is off-putting

The story is bundled, so you get a long ride of 5 books back to back, containing magic, realm jumping, chasing for a lost sister and becoming a "god" of some sort....

yeah okay, it's not like there aren't other stories likes this, so I thought I give it a shot as an audiobook.

The storyteller, or reader, seems to be used to be either dictating in front of a class or reading a telegram.
You constantly get :
A. a breathy ending in the sentence, as if to give a sensual note to it...
B. a distinct change of tone of the last word in the line, followed by a silence at the end, as if that would be the moment to make the remark "period"or "break"
- pronounced word separation, as. it . was. indeed. dictated. to. be .a . telegram. period.
break. next.line.

this goes on through the entire story in a kind of A-B, A-B reading cadence.
It distracts from the content in a very bad way.
I'm not trying to be mean here, I know it takes time and effort to do this, but I'm sorry, this story I think would benefit from a different reading style.

The story itself isn't a fantastic gem either. I seen better, I seen worse.
It's okay, but doesn't standout in a particular point or subject.

It could be that I need to read other titles first, in order to know where the characters come from and what their background is, but as it is, I don't feel like the mc changed all that much during the story.
Ok so she learned something about herself; about who she is and she developed new and more powers, but that's about it. Oh yeah...and a love interest, which she absolutely does not want, or have time for, so you know she will end up with exactly that/ him/ it.
that last thing gives you a nice insight in what to expect; it is all a little bit too predictable.

Saving her lost sister, sure, but please don't succeed in book 1 already, ok? We need to go through another 4!
Again, not trying to be mean, but the way the end is setup in a couple of the books here, it is just too obvious that the mc will fail and needs to get stronger first before succeeding.
The fact you see it coming takes away the excitement you feel or should be building. It's like, "hey, she's gonna fail, he's going to escape in the last second, so why cheer her on?"...
better call it quits now, go back to the training and come back with a new plan, eh?

the ghost dogs are a nice treat, those drew a couple laughs, but sadly not enough to save the story...

Story interesting, but text and narration annoying

Struggled to finish this box set, the historical parts of the story were enjoyable and interesting, I'm a big norse myths fan. The writing of the book was annoying in the extreme. Certain words/phrases are used over and over throughout the entire series. Characters felt immature and became annoying. If i heard the word 'thanks' from Bree one more time I'd have hurled my tablat at the wall. The narrator made the Characters sound even more like kids, than the text in the story.. Except for Cade, who by looking at the artwork on the books covers looks to be early 20s, sounded like a 40 year old bloke.. Which in turn made the other characters sound like high school kids. I love fantasy books, but this series was definitely aimed at a very young audience, even the 'bad language' was pathetic. Give me Sarah J Mass anytime.
