Torsdag den 18. maj 2000 klokken 23.33 indgik der en anmeldelse til alarmcentralen i Odense fra en mand, der ønskede at anmelde, at han troede, at der lå en død mand på gulvet i en villa i Korup, Odense NV. Anmelderen ringede fra et hus, hvor han havde henvendt sig for at låne en telefon. Huset lå cirka en kilometer fra gerningsstedet og indeholdt den lokale cykelforretning. Cykelhandleren viste sig senere at være et særdeles vigtigt vidne for sagens opklaring. Anmelderen blev bedt om at vente på politiet og føre dem til villaen, hvor fundet af den døde mand skulle være sket, og samtidig sendte vagthavende en ambulance til stedet, der lå cirka 10 kilometer fra Odense.
