About this listen

Can it be right to persist in a bigamous marriage? Mr. Peacocke, a classical scholar, has come to Broughtonshire with his beautiful American wife to live as a schoolmaster. But when the blackmailing brother of her first husband - a reprobate from Louisiana - appears at the school gates, their dreadful secret is revealed and the county is scandalised.

With its scathing depiction of American manhood, it's jousting with convention, and its amiable, egotistical protagonist, Dr Wortle's School is one of the sharpest and most engaging of Trollope's later novels.

I was doubtful that this story would be fascinating but was happily surprised. it was such a great story and study of the time that it was written. The narration was fantastic and the characters all sparked

Lovely and interesting Trollope as usual

It was an absolute joy to listen to this short story. Having the Timothy West read the Paliser series was a pleasure, especially when I went on to another Trollope with a different reader and was quite disappointed. Imagine the gift that this was to appear in my library without me knowing that it was Timothy West again. A delight, light hearted, spirited and with an obvious understanding of the language of Trollope. I shall return to these again

Amusing and moral

A very engaging story. So well written. The narration is truly wonderful. The narrator is a delight and adds to the listening experience. Each character comes alive due to the mastery of Mr Wesr's narration. A very enjoyable listen.

It is an amusing insight into the social norms of the era and how even then the younger generstions were making changes to suit their more modern outlook.

A rather different style of story telling and writing for Trollope. Neither scandalous nor interesting for a modern reader. Not among his best. I recommend the author, but not this title.
