Publisher's Summary

If you ever get married, remember my name: Max Henderson. In my line of work, you acquire a certain perspective on supposedly everlasting unions....

  1. Pre-nups are your friend.
  2. The person you married is not the person you’re divorcing.
  3. And I hope you didn’t spend much on the wedding because that was one helluva waste of hard-earned cash, wasn’t it?

But some guys are willing to take a chance. Like my brother, who thinks he’s going to ride off into the sunset with the woman of his dreams in a haze of glitter on unicorns. And the wedding planner - the green-eyed beauty who makes a living convincing suckers to shell out thousands of dollars on centerpieces - is raking it in on this matrimonial monstrosity.

The thing is, Charlie Love is not unlike me. We’re both cogs in the wedding-industrial complex. As the best man, I know her game - and I can play it better than her. But after one scorching, unexpected kiss, I’m thinking I might just want to get played.

A HEARTFELT ROMANCE WITH A DELICIOUS SLOW BURN

This was a new to me author however I thought I’d give her a try.. and I’m so very glad I did because this opposites attract amusing love story was really enjoyable. A wedding planner who is looking for Mr. Right when along comes Mr. Oh So Wrong.. because Divorce Lawyer Max had been ruthlessly burned by love before and sees nothing but the bad side of failed marriages in his office every day. So he doesn’t do commitments, doesn’t make promises, doesn’t do repeats and definitely doesn’t date.. so, when he sees a mysterious beauty in pink sitting at the Bar, he tries to have a ‘one and done’ with her.. but things don’t exactly go his way.. and then he finds out just who she is. However, the more Max gets to know Charlie (who is his brother’s Wedding Planner) the more he wants her.. but be careful Max because this feisty little lady could get under your skin, could drive you mad, could push your boundaries and could change your whole future. And will Charlie be tempted by the handsome Player?.. will she be crazy enough to agree to a ‘just for now’ fling?.. will she eventually come to regret her decision?.. and could she reveal and steal this Player’s heart?

I think we all know the answers to those questions because it’s a fairly predictable ‘done before’ plot.. but the wickedly delicious rocky road to get there was so very enjoyable as the jaded cynic and the prickly dreamer’s chemistry and relationship beliefs clashed over and over again. They truly didn’t want to be lustfully drawn to, sexually aware of and distractingly attracted to the other.. but add in their loveable personalities, and voila Cupid’s arrow hit its mark. In this insightful addictive story there’s witty snarky banter, sex, romance, a good secondary cast, complex characters and character growth, depth and humor en-route to the sweet HEA ending. The dual POV narration by Jason (.. I love you Jason) was excellent as usual and his vocal abilities brought each and every one of the characters to life with a smooth sexy tone and he definitely made this a 5 star audiobook. Pippa Jayne’s narration was good too.

Worth a credit? It’s an instant flare and fire that brings delicious anticipation.. it’s a well-paced slow-burn that flashes and sparks into so much more.. it’s a well-written oil and water love story and this talented author made the impossible happen.. and yes, it is IMO, creditworthy.

4.5 stars. Beautifully written and narrated.

This is the first of a series of 3 standalone romances – one for each of the three friends running their law practice together.

I loved this novel for the way the author brought two opposites together. The establishment of their opposing views on important matters was very well done. Then the undeniable attraction and reconsideration of first impressions was superbly executed.

These characters were both very likeable. Lawyers are often portrayed as sharks with heartless intentions, and it was great to see the hero caring for his clients, colleagues, family and ultimately his love interest. I became very invested with both main characters. The romance itself was warm and loving so the general atmosphere and the relationship made me melty with happiness for the characters.

Pippa Jayne is one of my favourite narrators and I loved her performances of all the characters. She is a reason for me to try any book.

Jason Clarke was stellar in this story showing the hero’s outward marble exterior but also his vulnerability as we got to know him. And while acting out the secondary roles, Jason Clarke showcased a natural talent for an English accent (which I can’t wait to hear a lot of in book 2).

The narrating team in this story was perfection, supporting an already well put-together romantic story and providing a beautiful listening experience.

Great performance, fun enemies to lover story

What do you get when you put a wedding singer and a divorce attorney together in an enemies to lover story? You get lots of sparks. I liked their banter and the evolution of their relationship. I liked Max's friends (and Jason Clarke with an English accent? sigh!) and the other supporting cast members, overall were interesting. I have to admit I was a little torn about having Charlie's parents as one of the major plot points in the book. However, overall, the book flowed well and I enjoyed it.

Admittedly, one of the most enjoyable points was Jason Clarke. He's really effortless in playing multiple roles, even with accents. He is a pleasure to listen to and I know I will always enjoy his role in a book. Pippa Jayne held her own too, taking over her parts well. I enjoyed their narration very much!

Charlie and Max

A witty, charming, and sinfully seductive story. The banter, connection, and palpable chemistry between Max and Charlie is amazing. Loved how Max called her Charles.. super cute! Kate Meader is a fantastic author. I enjoyed every single second of this book.
Jason Clarke is always phenomenal. Pippa Jayne is just as fantastic, loved them both.

Light but meaningful

Liked that it was very light, but that there was a bit of exploration into what marriage means to different people, that's it's not just all day sunshine but takes work.

Jumped quickly

I love the premise of the book; however it appeared to jump really quick between chapters. The transitions were also jerky (ie it jumped from the brothers talking in James’ room to Max giving his best man speech) with no mention of the ceremony. Overall, the story is hot and done with great detail, it probably could have been longer if stories went into more detail and the transitions were done more thoroughly. Another example is when Max tells Charlie that his mom wants to talk to her, there seems to be such emphasis on it then it jumps to a completely different scene. Also, why is there no mention of why their mom has a British accent but they don’t? Overall, nice story though.
