About this listen

When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a young girl disappears in the aftermath, Sarah Tucker becomes obsessed with finding her. Accustomed to dull chores in a childless household and hosting her husband’s wearisome business clients for dinner, Sarah suddenly finds herself questioning everything she thought she knew, as her investigation reveals that people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead.

What begins in a peaceful neighbourhood reaches its climax on a remote, unwelcoming Scottish island as the search puts Sarah in league with a man who finds himself being hunted down by murderous official forces.

you can see the lineage of slow horses in this, edge of seat action. some characters could've been further developed.

great pace

Surprisingly different from Slow Horses and a very engaging plot. I particularly liked the narration.

Full of surprises

Great writing. Good story. Performance had good accents and flow but I found the unusual staccato of every character's speech annoying by the end.

Excellent quirky writing

The trip down Cemetery Road is inevitable, but thirty-something Sarah Tucker doesn’t want to take it just yet. Very powerful forces disagree. Can a bored housewife with no experience of spooks and the lengths to which they will go to protect state secrets survive?

A bored suburban housewife follows a whim and is catapulted into a world of intrigue and murder.

Got this when I heard a TV series was being made with Emma Thompson as Zoe. God I hope she can give it a bit of life, it’s very slow and Sarah the main character is bloody annoying. Zoe is a secondary but lively character. I didn’t mind the basic storyline and the narration is fine, except that you can hear the narrator moving saliva in her mouth and swallowing all the time, not particularly pleasant… I love Mick Herron’s Slow Horses they’re superb, I hope the other books in this series perk up a bit, hopefully Sarah will fade into the background. I’ll give book 2 a go just to see.

Tedious with annoying heroine

Didn’t like the narration or the stupid heroine. Very annoying. The soldier could have had a bigger part. Zoe was only a side character.

Too long

Sarah is brilliantly portrayed. Zoe needs her own story. Herron at his very best.

His best

Yes it wanders and seems overlong. However, the plot holds together well enough. Some loose threads at the end. Reading performance was good.

A bit rambling

I don’t usually stop books halfway through, but this is such a silly book I had to from self respect. If I hadn’t read Slough House I would never read Mick Heron again. Luckily he’s come a long way since this awful first novel. The narration is horrendous too.

Awful. Couldn’t finish.

I tried to persist with this one, I now understand why it was only $5.99. After a couple of hours, Sarah became an even more annoying main character, no wonder her husband became so frustrated by her, she was just a silly housewife, spoilt, downtrodden, there was absolutely nothing going for her, least of all this very disjointed story, just couldn't listen any longer.
Don't waste your time or money.

Strange
