Publisher's Summary

John Piper writes, "I will tell you what a tragedy is. I will show you how to waste your life. Consider this story from the February 1998 Reader's Digest: A couple 'took early retirement from their jobs in the Northeast five years ago when he was 59 and she was 51. Now they live in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they cruise on their 30-foot trawler, play softball and collect shells. . . .' Picture them before Christ at the great day of judgment: 'Look, Lord. See my shells.' That is a tragedy.

"God created us to live with a single passion: to joyfully display his supreme excellence in all the spheres of life. The wasted life is the life without this passion. God calls us to pray and think and dream and plan and work not to be made much of, but to make much of him in every part of our lives."

This work is a passionate call for this generation to make their lives count for eternity. John Piper acknowledges that the risks for those who seek to accomplish something in life - risks in relationships for the sake of righteousness and authenticity, risks with money for the cause of the Gospel, and risks in witnessing to the truth and beauty of Christ. Readers will find their passion for the cross of Christ enlarged as a result of listening to this title.

Encouraging and Convicting!

I am thankful for this book, I am tired of wasting much of the life God has given me in Christ. I have been challenged to seriously consider my ways as a steward of the gospel and disciple of Christ. I have seen through this work places in my thinking and life where I have been influenced by the world concerning money family and work. I resolve therefore, God please help me to not waste my life! Let us Go therefore and make disciples Matt 28:20

Primarily Missions Focused

I love Piper's teaching. I would not have guessed by the title of the book that the majority of it was focused on growing our hearts for Missions work. He does an excellent job of showing the need and importance of having a heart for reaching the unreached with the gospel. However, I anticipated more teaching on how to make the most of our lives here at home, if we don't go into missions work. He does spend time on that, just less. I feel like this book is more geared toward young adults or teenagers who have not already found their vocation and would be open and available to consider missions work as a primary vocation.

A must read.

If all a disciple had were the Scriptures, the Church, and this book, they would fare incredibly well in serving their Lord and Savior.

Though dated- the book was a challange (good kind)

Though the book is a little dated in its language and examples (or maybe just American). I found the book to be a real challenge. The good kind, that leaves you with a finished book, but unfinished brooding and thinking and praying.

Do read this book, but provide time for digesting. I couldnt read it in my normal pace but only went over one section at a time, with a notebook.

Fantastic book that has helped everyone in our family

A friend gave this book to our son when he went to college. We love Piper and so I wasn't surprised when my son said how much it affected him and handed it down to our daughter in college. It has been years since I looked at it and listening to it again just stirs up that desire for God in the midst of the craziness of life. I pray, dear Lord, we don't waste our lives.

Inspiring listen

A truly inspiring book. Helped me to focus on the fact that life is all about preparing for eternity, and that true purpose and meaning in this life can only come from that preparation.

For any serious Christian who really wants to focus their life on serving Jesus.
