About this listen

Perhaps this concealment, this disguise, was beneath me… It is done, however, and it was done for the best. Elizabeth Bennet, walking in Kent the day after Mr Darcy’s proposal meets with an unfortunate mishap. A meeting with an adder has disastrous consequences for her and when she wakes from a period of unconsciousness, she has no memory at all of the last ten months of her life. To her complete shock she learns that she is engaged to a man called Darcy, a man she has no recollection of meeting before.

Darcy is shocked himself to realize that Elizabeth thinks she is engaged to him but his efforts to correct her misapprehension are thwarted by those around her who believe that to learn the truth will be detrimental to her recovery. As the days go by, Darcy and Elizabeth spend time together, reading and driving out around Kent, behaving as the lovers Darcy always dreamt they would be. To continue in the disguise, to forget the contentions and misunderstandings of their past proves an unbearable temptation.

When the worst happens and Elizabeth learns that not only did she refuse Darcy’s proposal, she hated him. What she learns seems completely incongruous with the man she has fallen in love with…and yet she simply does not know if she can forgive him for deceiving her.

I thought I had finally found a P&P variation that I would like. However, once Lizzy discovers the truth she is not only justifiably hurt, she becomes (in my opinion) unreasonable. To set a boundary regarding trust and respect is admirable but she blindly discounts any acknowledgement of good and starts seeing Darcy as ALL bad. We know she will come around but I felt this was sloppily done by the author. As for Darcy, we know him to be a good guy but his persistence in the face of many a determined "no" triggered a red flag mentality within me. If you love the idea of a guy being obsessive this may actually be your thing - truly. But persistence like this is only good when the object actually wants it on some level (which perhaps the author trusts we will assume until the story develops further) otherwise my heart whispers "restraining order?". And Lizzy was initially pretty adamant with her rejection after the truth came out and Darcy's mental reaction to Mr Bennet's request that he respect Elizabeth's wishes and cease writing to her actually creeped me out.

This story had some good aspects but I think it would have greater appeal with less drama and more finesse in character portrayal.

I'm always engaged by this authors style of writing in combination with the enthralling plots and well developed characters. Amy D'Orazio has created another story well worth a listen and i thoroughly recommend it.

Another gem
