Johannes Faustus, der berühmte Schwarzkünstler, wurde in der Grafschaft Anhalt geboren. Seine Eltern wohnten in dem Marktflecken Sontwedel und waren arme, fromme Bauersleute. Der Bruder seines Vaters, der reiche Oheim zu Wittenberg, hatte keine leiblichen Kinder, darum zog er den jungen Faustus, den er wegen seiner hohen Geistesgaben liebgewonnen hatte, an Kindes statt auf und hielt ihn fleißig zum Lernen an. Später wurde er auf die hohe Schule zu Ingolstadt geschickt und hier tat sich der junge Faust in Kunst und Wissenschaften so hervor, dass er in der Prüfung elf anderen Meistern der Freien Künste vorgezogen und selbst mit der Magisterkappe geschmückt wurde.
