Der Titel ist bittere Ironie, denn wie sich zeigt, sind diese Jahre alles andere als wunderbar gewesen. Da wurden bereits Kinder, mit Spielzeuggewehren im Anschlag, zum Hass auf den Klassenfeind gedrillt und in der sozialistischen Wehrerziehung gelehrt, wie man tötet.
Mit Erscheinen des Buches 1976 im Westen wurde Kunze aus dem Schriftstellerverband der DDR ausgeschlossen. Mittlerweile in zehn Sprachen übersetzt, erscheint es nun als ungekürzte Lesung mit Winfried Glatzeder.
