Die Arroganz, mit der der Kardinal sprach, imponierte Bloch wenig; obwohl er sich müde und erschöpft nach dem langen Ritt fühlte. Er kannte die kleinen Tricks, mit denen die Kirche versuchte Macht zu demonstrierten.
