Zigeuner waren gekommen und hatten ihr Lager beim Kirchhof außerhalb des Dorfes aufgeschlagen. Die Weiber und Kinder trieben sich bettelnd in der Umgebung herum, die Männer verrichteten allerlei Flickarbeit an Ketten und Kesseln und bekamen die Erlaubnis, so lange da zu bleiben, als sie Beschäftigung finden konnten und einen kleinen Verdienst.
Diese Frist war noch nicht um, eines Sommermorgens aber fand man die Stätte, an der die Zigeuner gehaust hatten, leer. Sie waren fortgezogen in ihren mit zerfetzten Plachen überdeckten, von jämmerlichen Mähren geschleppten Leiterwagen. Von dem Aufbruch der Leute hatte niemand etwas gehört noch gesehen; er musste des Nachts in aller Stille stattgefunden haben.
