Auf Aphrodites Rat hin gelang es ihm, mit seinem gelähmten Vater auf den Schultern und zusammen mit seinen Gefolgsleuten, aus den brennenden Mauern Trojas zu entkommen. Das Orakel von Delos riet ihm, Italien, das Land seiner Urväter zu suchen. Nach seinem Aufenthalt bei Heleos und Acestes verschlug es ihn nach Karthago, wo sich Königin Dido in ihn verliebte. Nach Landung in Italien gab ihm in der Unterwelt der Vater einen Ausblick auf die römische Geschichte. In der Gestalt von Aeneas berühren sich die griechische und römische Sagenwelt.
