Ein Serienmörder terrorisiert die kleine Hafenstadt La Rochelle. In fünf verregneten Nächten hat er scheinbar wahllos fünf Frauen ermordet, die Polizei ist ratlos. Nur der schüchterne jüdische Schneider Kachoudas kennt den Täter. Es ist sein Nachbar, der angesehene Hutmacher Léon Labbé. Das hat er zufällig im Café de Colonnes herausgefunden, wo die Herren, die sonst nichts verbindet, beide abendlich verkehren. Doch Kachoudas geht nicht zur Polizei. Die ausgesetzte Belohnung würde dem Schneider einige Sorgen nehmen, doch er weiß, dass man ihm, dem Einwanderer, keinen Glauben schenken wird. Er beginnt den Hutmacher zu verfolgen und gerät gegen seinen Willen in den Bann des Bösen.
