Die Novelle "Die Nase" (1836) gehört zu den schon fast surrealistischen "Petersburger Novellen", die vor dem Hintergrund der Großstadt gesellschaftlicher Missstände und menschliches Fehlverhalten zeigen. Wie kaum ein anderer Schriftsteller zeigt Gogol den Widerspruch zwischen Schein und Sein und die Flucht aus der quälenden Wirklichkeit in die fixe Idee auf. Entsprechend neigt er zu Übersteigerung und drastischen Kontrasten, lässt Pathos in Banalität umschlagen und eine Fülle realistischer Details ins Fantastische und Groteske wuchern.
