Mit dicken Nebelschwaden hingen sie über dem Land und machten den Winter dunkel und traurig. Dunkel und traurig fühlten sich auch die Menschen und im Schloss des Schneekönigs wehklagten die Schneegeister. Sie wollten endlich auf die Erde, um sie mit einer schönen strahlenden Schnee- und Eis-, und Reifschicht zu bedecken. Aber die Nebelgeister gaben nicht nach. Da half schließlich nur noch eine List, und der Schneekönig hatte da auch schon eine Idee...
