Werther, ein schwärmerischer, ungefestigter junger Mann, lernt Lotte kennen - sofort verbindet beide eine tiefe Seelenverwandtschaft. Werther verliebt sich unsterblich, doch Lotte kann die Gefühle nicht erwidern, denn sie ist mit dem eher bodenständigen Albert verlobt. In seiner Verzweiflung verlässt Werther die Stadt. Bald wird ihm klar, daß er ohne Lotte nicht leben kann, und er kehrt zurück. Während eines Besuches bei der mittlerweile Verheirateten übermannen ihn die Gefühle, und das Drama nimmt seinen Lauf.
1774 geschrieben, wurde "Werther" zu einem Bestseller, Goethe quasi ein Popstar und die Hauptperson ein Idol für die Jugend, die sich bis dato literarisch vernachlässigt gefühlt hatte.
