Hatto, der Eremit, stand in der Einöde und betete zu Gott. Es stürmte, und sein langer Bart und das zottige Haar umflatterten ihn, wie die vom Winde bewegten Grasbüschel auf den Zinnen einer alten Ruine. Doch strich er weder das Haar aus den Augen, noch steckte er den Bart in den Gürtel, denn er hatte die Arme zum Gebet erhoben. Seit Sonnenaufgang hatte er die knochigen, behaarten Arme ebenso unermüdlich gen Himmel gestreckt, wie ein Baum seine Zweige dahin richtet, und er gedachte bis zum Abend in dieser Stellung zu verharren. Er hatte um ein großes Ding zu bitten.
