Meine wunderschöne Mama trug ein weites Kleid aus dunkelbraunem Tüll mit hellbraunen Samtbändchen durchzogen. Man sagte, der Hofmeister der Familie W. mache ihr riesig den Hof. Wir verstanden das Wort »Hof« nicht. Eines Vormittags wurden wir zu dem Viadukt von vierzig Metern Höhe über dem Schwarzatal geführt, wo zwei Lastenzüge aufeinander aufgefahren waren. Die eine Berglokomotive hatte die andere direkt bestiegen. Wir nahmen zum Andenken sehr viel Zigarettenpapierschachteln mit, die einem Waggon entstürzt waren. Wir waren erstaunt, keine Leichen zu sehen. Selbst der Lokomotivführer war »mit dem Schrecken davongekommen«. Papa schenkte ihm einen Gulden. Als Belohnung, davongekommen zu sein.
