Heinrich Mann stieß 1893 während seiner ersten Frankreichreise auf die Biografie des Königs Henri IV., ab 1933 schrieb er einen Roman-Zweiteiler über den Herrscher, der Frankreich von 1589 bis 1610 regierte, das von Bürgerkriegen zerrüttete Land wieder aufbaute und den französischen Protestanten freie Religionsausübung zusicherte.
Bearbeitung und Einleitung: Rudolf Jürgen Bartsch, Regie: Heinz Nesselrath. Heinrich Mann in Lübeck geboren, schrieb Romane, Erzählungen, Essays und Schauspiele. 1933 emigrierte er nach Frankreich, später in die USA. 1949 nahm er die Berufung zum Präsidenten der neu gegründeten Akademie der Künste in OstBerlin an, starb aber 1950 noch in Santa Monica/Kalifornien.
