Friedrich Mergel wächst Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts in Westfalen auf. Nachdem sein trinksüchtiger Vater im Wald erfroren ist, kommt er zu seinem Onkel und dessen unehelichem Sohn Johannes. Mit krummen Geschäften und Diebstählen verschaffen sie sich Geld und Ansehen. Dann wird Friedrich vom Juden Aaron öffentlich bloßgestellt und er erschlägt ihn unter einer Buche im Wald. Er flieht und gerät im Krieg gegen die Türken in Gefangenschaft.
Erst nach 28 Jahren kehrt Friedrich unerkannt in sein Heimatdorf zurück. Doch seine Schuld lässt ihm keine Ruhe und so erhängt er sich schließlich an dem Baum, den man seit dem Mord die Judenbuche nennt.
