Friedrich Mergel, die Hauptfigur dieser bekanntesten Novelle der deutschsprachigen Literatur, erschlägt im Streit den Juden Aaron und flieht. 28 Jahre später kehrt er in seine Heimat zurück und erhängt sich am Ort des Verbrechens, an der so genannten Judenbuche, an der steht: "Wenn du dich diesem Orte nahest, so wird es dir ergehen, wie du mir getan hast."
