Heinz Schwitzke, der Nachlassverwalter der radiophonischen Arbeiten des Dichters, datiert das Werk von Günter Eich in das Jahr 1949. Der Autor schrieb es nach Motiven eines Märchens von Hans Christian Andersen; als Zauberspiel deutet es auf einen anderen Dichter zurück, den er liebte, auf Nestroy.
Ein Paar Schuhe verleiht die Kraft, sich in andere Zeiten und Zustände zu versetzen. Ein sich realisierendes Wunschdenken jedoch richtig zu handhaben, übersteigt die sehr menschlichen Neigungen und Gelüste der von der Fee Glück und der Fee Trauer Erkorenen.
