Jever im Jahre 1230, im Norden des Heiligen Römischen Reiches. Nur mit Hilfe ihres Vaters, dem Baumeister Wille, entrinnt Anna der Vergewaltigung durch einen einflussreichen Ratsherrn der Stadt. Die Rettung seiner Tochter kommt den Baumeister, dessen Baustelle kurz darauf einem Feuer zum Opfer fällt, jedoch teuer zu stehen. Er wird der Hexerei angeklagt und das anschließende Gottesurteil kostet ihn das Leben. Da nun auch Anna in Gefahr ist, flieht sie aus der Stadt und kommt vorerst bei Willes Schwester und deren Familie unter.
Wegen der ärmlichen Verhältnisse und dem brutalen Ehemann der Tante hält es Anna jedoch nicht länger dort aus. So macht sich die junge Frau erneut auf den Weg, angetrieben von ihrem Lebenstraum. Sie will Gewandschneiderin werden und die herrlichsten Kleider anfertigen. Aber ist sie bereit, dafür ihr Glück zu opfern, vielleicht sogar ihr Leben?
