Die Gesellschaft Jesu (Societas Jesu) ist der derzeit größte Orden der katholischen Kirche. Gegründet durch Ignatius von Loyola (1491-1556), war dies die erste Ordensgemeinschaft, deren Ziele ganz von Mission und Lehre geprägt waren. Durch seine stark intellektuell-missionarische Sendung stand der Orden immer im Mittelpunkt heftiger Diskussionen. Einerseits unterstützten die Jesuiten oft kompromisslos die päpstliche Autorität, andererseits geriet er mehrmals in Konflikt mit der Amtkirche. 1773 wurde er sogar ganz aufgelöst. Aber immer wieder hat sich der Jesuitenorden regeneriert und eine Reihe bedeutender Persönlichkeiten hervorgebracht.
